For over ten years, guitarist and composer Arturo Parra has been working exclusively on the performance, creation and composition of contemporary pieces. His primary interests are in sonic exploration, development of new playing techniques and expansion of the guitar’s expressive range.
He obtained a doctorate in music from the Université de Montréal in 1998 and is now devoting his energies to the composition and performance of his own works for solo guitar, as well as for guitar and vocal expression, and guitar and spoken word (with the group Paroles Égales). In addition, he collaborates with electroacoustic composers on pieces for guitar and tape. A native of Colombia, he settled in Canada in 1989.
Arturo Parra won the Paso al Arte national composition competition (Colombia) for Furor, for guitar and vocal expression (1999) and the Public Prize at the 4th Concurso Internacional de Música Eletroacústica de São Paulo (CIMESP, Brazil, 2001) for Soledad, for guitar and tape, composed with Gilles Gobeil. He has been awarded two national composition grants from the Colombian Ministry of Culture (1995 and 1997) as well as several grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
