Dimitri Mitropoulos

Dimitri Mitropoulos has been played on NTS shows including Tommasi, with Madama Butterfly first played on 13 January 2020.

Dimitri Mitropoulos is one of those conductors from the mid-20th century, like Hermann Abendroth, who was rediscovered as the century drew to a close. A renowned interpreter of the works of Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and other late Romantics, he was also one of the most controversial and tragic musical figures of his era, owing to his barely concealed homosexuality and his fanatical, almost priest-like dedication to music, which ultimately helped cost him his life. Dimitri Mitropoulos (Greek: Δημήτρης Μητρόπουλος) (1 March [O.S. 18 February] 1896 – 2 November 1960), was a Greek conductor, pianist, and composer. He received international fame, in the classical music world, both as a major conductor and composer of the 20th century. Also known as Dimitris Mitropoulos.
