Monster X

Monster X

Monster X has been played on NTS shows including Alicia Matthews, with No Device first played on 18 September 2019.

There are at least two bands under this name:

1.) Monster X is a straight-edge hardcore band from Albany, New York in the mid-90s who eschewed the genre's typical moshcore sound in favor of harsh, guttural grindcore. They were also notable for their thoughtful lyrics, which tackled political and philosophical questions as well as the personal quest to live drug-free. In particular, their support for drug legalization and their firm anti-religious stance set them apart from the straight-edge mainstream.

Their recorded output consisted primarily of compilation tracks and split 7" EPs with other bands, which have been collected on the CD "Indoctrination: Complete Discography".

Former members of Monster X run the Gloom and Hater of God record labels and have played in notable hardcore bands including Devoid of Faith, Drop Dead, Limp Wrist, Das Oath, and others.

2.) Monster X is an electro/break-beat/IDM project based in London and releasing albums on free e-label Bedroom Research.

Professional radio / tv sound designer by day, electro-breakcore mentalist by night, this smiling misfit has caused so much recent mayhem in his hometown of Grenoble (France), that only London could take him. Since arriving here, he’s already torn up the Interakt electro party, Yardcore, north London’s ill FM show, and various events across Europe including the Riddim Collision Festival 2007 with Plaid, Scorn and Enduser.

Coming from a background in thrash metal and industrial music, with his previous 12-piece metal band gigs involved fake-blood-splattering theatrics and on-stage riots, he later went the solo electronic route as it was more efficient at causing mayhem. Taking up Native Instrument’s Reaktor software, he’s spent the past few years exclusively designing his own instruments and effects to further mangle audio to his own extremes.

Intrigued by his way of adeptly and confidently switching from solid, body-rocking electro grooves to abstract, mentalist breakcore, feisty hyper-processed dancefloor electronics, labels like Jarring Effects, Bedroom Research and Peace Off have been quick to release his militant, lunatic sound.

The decision to move to London came after his last performance in France caused a small riot among old punks fighting in a record shop, resulting in smashed windows and other damage.

3.) The first band to ever call themselves Monster X was from Orange County California (USA) and they started April 1986. Their music was punk rock with a bit of funk in their songs. Members: Vocals - Steve Belmonte, Guitar - Dan Moses, Bass - Steve Price, Drums - Brian Prenger. The played several shows from 1986 to 1992 and a few reunion shows in 2005 with a new lineup which included Steve Belmonte as the only original member. Guitar player Dan Moses plays in the band the Dynotones. Steve Belmonte sings now and then for the Luxurious Adults.
