Given all life leads to jazz we might as well take the scenic route. An uncanny hour of words and music from producer Phil Smith. Carefully formulated but never formulaic, an inclusive hour of the straight-ahead and the experimental.

Zacht Automaat

Zacht Automaat

Zacht Automaat has been played on NTS shows including Anadol, with For Zappi and Jean first played on 9 November 2019.

Zacht Automaat fell from the sky, or so it felt one day last year. What other explanation might one have for a band that does not exist… and then suddenly does and before you know it has unleashed hours of record quality material? The genesis defies logic as easily as the music itself evades categorization.

On first listen you might be forgiven for assuming the recordings were unearthed Faust jams, or Baroque Psych demos or more likely a mix-tape combining the two with yet further archival treasures of disparate genres past, even still you would be wrong. In truth the music sprung from the minds of a pair of collaborators Toronto off-beat enthusiasts will have already heard of.

Between the Januarys of 2010 and 2011, Zacht Automaat (Dutch for "soft machine") released 7 original records and 1 Beatles cover album. 3 of these records were released by local label Medusa as tapes, all of them have been uploaded for free internet consumption. These records have soundtracked much of my waking life since being released due to their composition of a hypnotic, mysterious, joyful music. These records audibly celebrate the bliss of music making, the mystery of melody. I can easily swear to you that these 8 records (and whatever other forthcoming records) will form a legacy of 'important' & 'historically worthy' art rock. These records will be ruthlessly searched for (once they are pressed), and picked over, analysed. With that in mind, I offer my own humble navigation of the Zacht Automaat world and the records therein. Let them into your life…
