Stereolab is an Anglo-French avant-pop band formed in London in 1990. The group is led by the songwriting duo of Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier. Their music combines repetitive motorik rhythms with vintage electronic keyboards and female vocals in English and French, drawing on influences from krautrock, funk, jazz, 1960s French pop, and Brazilian music. Their lyrics often explore political and philosophical themes inspired by the Surrealist and Situationist art movements.

The band was formed by Gane, who plays guitar and keyboards, and Sadier, who provides vocals, keyboards, and guitar, following the break-up of the band McCarthy. Gane and Sadier, who were romantically involved for fourteen years, have remained the group’s only consistent members. Other long-term members included Mary Hansen (backing vocals, keyboards, and guitar), who joined in 1992 and died in 2002, and Andy Ramsay (drums), who joined in 1993. Sean O’Hagan, leader of the High Llamas, was a member from 1993 to 1994 and continued to contribute occasionally to later recordings.

Stereolab achieved moderate commercial success over their career. After leaving their contract with Elektra Records, their own label, Duophonic, signed distribution deals with Too Pure and later Warp Records. Following a ten-year hiatus, the band reunited for live performances in 2019 and released the studio album "Instant Holograms" on Metal Film in 2025.
