Melodic Energy Commission

Melodic Energy Commission

Melodic Energy Commission has been played on NTS shows including Black Impulse, with Rider From Nempnett Thrubwell first played on 30 October 2018.

A Vancouver, Canada-based branch of the Hawkwind family tree, which included among its membership Hawkwind electronics maestro Del Dettmar. The band released two albums: "Stranger In Mystery" from 1979, and "Migration Of The Snails" from 1980. On both albums the band's lineup consisted of Xaliman on vocals, guitar, piano, electro-keys, gongs, percussion, and shepherds pipes, Randy Raine-Reusch on dulcimer, khaen, gongs, and flutes, Del on EMS synth and Delatronics, George McDonald on guitar, theramin, and wall of oscillation, Mark Franklin on bass, and Paul Franklin percussion, tablas, glockenspiel, and synth organ, plus numerous guests. "Stranger In Mystery" features tribal, acoustic, flower power, hippie psychedelia combined with loads of spacerock electronics. The music is raw, but heavily exploratory, often changing radically within a single track. The second album features songs that are more developed - changing between beat-jazzy, fusion, thumping bass and drum beats, subtle electronics, and astral flute work.

According to Don Xaliman, Melodic Energy Commission is more of a recording band. They never perform any of the recorded music during their limited number of live gigs. They do however record all of their performances for possible release. Their last performances were 2009 at The WISE Hall Vancouver and Hippy Daze street festival in the Khatsahlano district of Vancouver. These performances led to the release in 2013 of 'Wave Packet' their first release since 2003 when 'Time is a Slippery Concept' was born out of the rehearsals for Nearly See Clearly, a live music interaction that incorporated lasers, astronomical, astrological light projection wizardry by Craig McCaw and John Tanner in the 360 degree Space Centre. Theatre.
