Metallica is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich and later based in San Francisco. Known for fast tempos, complex instrumentals and aggressive musicianship, the group became one of the founding big four bands of thrash metal alongside Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. The current lineup consists of Hetfield, Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo. Former members include Dave Mustaine, Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted.

The band achieved major commercial success with its third album, "Master of Puppets" (1986), which has been widely regarded as one of the most influential metal albums. The follow-up, "…And Justice for All" (1988), earned Metallica its first Grammy Award nomination. The self-titled album "Metallica" (1991) marked a shift toward a more mainstream sound and became the best-selling album of the SoundScan era in the United States, with more than 16 million copies sold. After exploring different musical styles on later releases, the band returned to a thrash-oriented approach with "Death Magnetic" (2008). Its most recent album, "72 Seasons," was released in 2023.

In 2000, Metallica became a central figure in the legal actions against the peer-to-peer service Napster, contributing to broader discussions about digital music distribution. The documentary film "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" (2004) examined the making of the album "St. Anger" (2003) and internal tensions within the band. Metallica was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. The band also co-wrote and appeared in the concert film "Metallica: Through the Never" (2013), which combined live performance footage with a fictional narrative starring Dane DeHaan.

Metallica is among the most commercially successful music acts, with more than 163 million albums sold worldwide as of 2023. It is the third-best-selling artist since the introduction of SoundScan in 1991, with 58 million albums sold in the United States as of 2017. The band’s discography includes eleven studio albums, four live albums, twelve video albums, one cover album, two extended plays, 37 singles and 39 music videos. Metallica has received ten Grammy Awards and has had six consecutive studio albums, from "Metallica" through "Hardwired… to Self-Destruct" (2016), debut at number one on the Billboard 200. The group has appeared on several lists of influential artists, including a ranking at number 61 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 greatest artists of all time.
