Kaleema

Kaleema

Kaleema has been played on NTS shows including Dark Sky, with Ritual first played on 23 January 2018.

Multinstrumentalist, composer, producer and singer based in Buenos Aires. With her debut album Nomada (2017), she managed to position herself in the Latin American scene, leading her to perform at important venues such as MUTEK Montreal and Lollapalooza Chile.

Cinematic and colourful textures come to life through Kaleema's synthesis of folk and future. Combining her background in Afro-Colombian music with classical training and an affinity for an innovative blend of free jazz, hip-hop and R&B, the artist conveys a dynamic and nomadic eclecticism.

Looking at Kaleema's influences helps to trace her musical approach: her adolescence was nurtured by learning classical guitar and violin while drinking in and reinterpreting her icons, from D'Angelo to Bill Withers. Her enthusiastic father ensured that she was not only surrounded by a large collection of Brazilian records, but also exposed to various German electronic innovators presented at the city's Goethe Institute. Following his studies at the SAE Institute in New York, Lewandowski initiated several collaborative processes, especially with Lido Pimienta and Gregor Schewllenbach of Kompakt records, building bridges between traditional sounds and rhythms fuelled by the club experience. This synthesis unfolds its richness in his 2017 debut album, Nómada, with which he toured Europe and Latin America. Argentinian artist Uji, who also performed at the festival, is one of the creators participating in the remix album released after Nómada.

In 2021, he released Útera, his second studio album, on Wonderwheel Recordings. The album works as a catalogue of different styles, interweaving various instruments and rhythms. From dub to Andean flutes to classical string melodies. Compared to its predecessor, it offers a more hypnotic and introspective space of creative fire and electronic beats, evolving at times between downtempo and an electronic atmosphere.
