Talk West

Talk West

Talk West has been played over 10 times on NTS, first on 8 November 2014. Talk West's music has been featured on 8 episodes.

Coming off like a post-rock Loren Connors, Tulsa's Dylan Aycock (a.k.a. Talk West) plays a sort of disconnected blues, sparse and twinkly and replete with the American guitar idioms we all know and love. On the eleven-minute "Willow and The Dogwood," from Talk West's upcoming debut LP, Black Coral Sprig, tape hiss fills in the negative space between Aycock's melodic noodling, making for a warm atmosphere that hints at the anthemic aspirations of and act like, say, Explosions In The Sky, without the arena-filling histrionics. "Willow and The Dogwood" is subtle and restrained-- uplifting, certainly, but not as straightforward. It would have worked well in an episode of Friday Night Lights. -Adhoc

Talk West is Tulsa resident Dylan Aycock. His musical work to date include collaboration in the groups Mar and Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, as well as his own recently hatched label, Scissor Tail Records. With Talk West, Dylan has distilled his otherwise diverse bag of musical tricks down to only a pedal steel (of couse you may hear some mutilation here and there). Improvising over this single instrument, Talk West unearths brief sketches that might conjure dust-covered imagery of the American Midwest. The music is reflective of a simpler side of American music and history, but it teeters on the edge of experimentalism just enough to stir you from your hypnosis and give cause for pause.

Aycock's work has been released on labels such as Hooker Vision, Make Mine Music, Abandon Building Records, Scissor Tail, and Kinarra. His other recent projects include a solo called The Doldrums, and two separate collaborations with Brad Rose, one called Angel Food and the other Mohawk Park.
