Cindy & Bert was a German schlager duo consisting of Jutta Berger (Cindy, born Gusenburger, January 26, 1948, Völklingen, Saarland) and Norbert Maria Berger (Bert, September 12, 1945, Völklingen, Saarland – July 14, 2012, Düsseldorf). Cindy & Bert gained fame in the 1970s with hits like Immer wieder sonntags (1973), Spaniens Gitarren, and Aber am Abend da spielt der Zigeuner (both 1974). By the late 1980s, Jutta Berger also established herself as a solo singer under the name Cindy Berger.
Career Norbert Berger came from a musical family, with his grandfather and father both serving as organists at St. Eligius Catholic Church in Völklingen. In the early 1960s, he was an electric bassist in an amateur band called Blue Birds, which later featured Jutta Gusenburger as a singer. The band eventually performed as Jutta und das Quintett Royal.
From 1965 onwards, Norbert and Jutta performed as a duo under the name Cindy & Bert. They married on May 20, 1967. Their first record, Saturday Morning (1969), became a modest success, followed by other hits such as Cäsar und Cleopatra, Ich hab' Heimweh, Holly Holy, and Jeder braucht jeden. Their 1970 single Der Hund von Baskerville, a German cover of Black Sabbath's Paranoid, has since become a collector's item.
The duo first attempted to represent Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1972 with Geh die Straße, coming close but ultimately failing. In 1973, they tried again with Wohin soll ich gehen? and Zwei Menschen und ein Weg. That same year, they had their biggest hit with Immer wieder sonntags. In 1974, Cindy & Bert represented Germany at Eurovision with Die Sommermelodie but finished last. They attempted Eurovision again in 1978 with Chanson d'été and Was die Sterne lenkt, but were unsuccessful.
During the 1970s, Cindy & Bert had more hits like Spaniens Gitarren (1974) and Wenn die Rosen erblühen in Malaga (1975), making them one of the most successful schlager duos of the decade. In 1976, their son Sascha was born, who later became a musician under the name Berger. From 1984, Cindy & Bert voiced the Saarlodris characters, used as TV mascots for Saarländischer Rundfunk. The duo continued recording together until the late 1980s.
Later Years The couple divorced in 1988 and pursued separate careers. Cindy Berger launched a solo career and participated in Eurovision's German pre-selections twice: in 1988 with Und leben will ich auch (placing 2nd) and in 1991 with Nie allein (placing 7th). She also recorded Bleib heut bei mir with Roger Whittaker in 1989. Bert continued working as a composer, lyricist, and producer. In the mid-1990s, Cindy & Bert reunited for TV oldies shows, performing their classic hits and releasing new material. They placed 7th at the 1997 Deutschen Schlager-Festspiele with Ich habe die Rose geseh’n.
In 2006, Cindy & Bert lived together for a week in the Big Brother village, broadcast daily on RTL II.
