Psychonautilus is the creative outlet of Thomas Tichai, who acts as vocalist, guitarist, composer and producer. Founded in Germany in 2001 and initially conceived as a home-recording project drawing heavily on influences from Krautrock, 70s avant-rock, early electronic and industrial music, Psychonautilus developed into a one-man live act in Liverpool (UK) in 2004. Alongside this transformation, the music was stripped down to its core ingredients and backed more and more by programmed beats and synthesizers over which Thomas Tichai would perform guitars and vocals to create pieces both dense and tense. This phase is documented on 2005's EP '72 Fluorescent Droppings Of A Baboon Headed Mongrel'.
Another relocation to Berlin, Germany, was reflected in the increasing influence of the fringes of hip-hop, electroclash and club culture on Psychonautilus' music, which led to a steadier, more dance-friendly sound. The now often overtly ironic lyrics would take on subjects such as the over-sexualized nature of society or the grotesqueness of the pop industry. The combination of these elements with the Psychonautilus trademark sounds - edgy guitar work and an often growling, sometimes high pitched voice - can be heard on the aptly titled EP 'Oversexed & Underfucked', released in 2009. This amalgamation of styles ranging from post-punk and krautrock to avant-funk and hip-hop also forms the backbone of Psychonautilus' live shows as a One-Man Disco.
