Wally Richardson

Wally Richardson

Wally Richardson has been played on NTS in shows including LDLDN, featured first on 1 October 2017. Songs played include Soul Guru and Monday Monday.

Wally Richarson came out of a rhythm and blues, soul jazz and pop experience. Because of this background and music reading ability, he was very active as an all around studio guitarist in the late 50's/60's/70's. He recorded a good cult album of psychedelic jazz funk which is now a collectors item. "Soul Guru" came out in 1969 on Prestige Records in New Jersey. It has all kinds of stuff on it: Soul, funk, jazz, and an instrumental covers of a hit from the day (Mammas and the Papas "Monday, Monday"). Heavy on Richardson's guitar, most of all it leans heavily on psychedelia with some cool results. Interesting instrumental cuts often using tasteful orchestra and horns. This was before Shuggie Otis, The Brothers Johnson, and acid jazz. Nowhere is a boring track. The original vinyl for this is heavily sought out {Soul Guru-Prestige Records(PR 7569); Rudy Van Gelder might have released this}. A reissue 'Limited Edition' 7" 45rpm -Monday Monday (Undercover Brother edit) b/w Senor Boogaloo- was put on on Dopebrother Records(7012) in 2006. Wally is still around and lives in the Poco Mountains of Pennsylvania. wallrich@ptd.net
