The Barton Workshop

The Barton Workshop

The Barton Workshop has been played on NTS in shows including Time Is Away, featured first on 23 May 2017. Songs played include A Rose Is A Rose Is A Round (1970) and Durations 2 (1960).

The Barton Workshop is an Amsterdam based ensemble founded in 1989 by composer-trombonist, James Fulkerson. The artistic philosophy of the ensemble is to perform the leading edge of contemporary music today - whether notated or not. They primarily create concerts, usually in collaboration with the composers, which are "composer portraits" giving either an overview or an in-depth representation of a chosen composer's work. They have collaborated with composers such as Alvin Lucier, Christian Wolff, Nicolas Collins, and Frank Denyer and given world and European premieres of works by Galina Ustvolskaya, Henryk Gorecki, James Fulkerson, Jerry Hunt, Frank Denyer, Nicolas Collins and others.

Because the works performed by the ensemble often require unusual performance techniques, ensemble skills, use live-electronics, etcetera, The Barton Workshop maintains a regular rehearsal schedule irrespective of the current concert or recording schedule in order to develop the requisite abilities needed for this music. This "workshop/research" aspect of the ensemble, alluded to in its name, is an important feature of the ensemble and is a distinguishing feature in their performances and recordings.

The discography of The Barton Workshop includes a 3 CD set of works by John Cage, a 3 CD set of Early and Middle Period works by Morton Feldman and single CD's by Galina Ustvolskaya, Christian Wolff (2) and Frank Denyer. They are currently working on CD's by Alvin Lucier, Morton Feldman, Philip Corner, Frank Denyer, Jerry Hunt, and James Fulkerson.

The Barton Workshop are: Elisabeth Smalt, Viola Soloist, John Anderson, Clarinet, Frank Denyer, Piano/Celeste, James Fulkerson, Conductor, Marieke Keser, Violin, Tobias Liebezeit, Percussion, Judith van Swaay, Cello, Jos Zwaanenburg, Flute
