As a college deejay on KZSU for some years in the early to 1990’s, Dopestyle was able to scratch his musical itch and venture into other genres outside of Hip-Hip & created The Dopestyle Memorial Peyote Turquoise & Ambrosia Show, a radio show that encompassed a meshing & openness to incorporating various musical styles & genres. It would be during his tenure as a deejay that Dopestyle would meet future collaborators Peanut Butter Wolf & Kutmasta Kurt. Meeting Peanut Butter Wolf initially from him calling in to Dopestyle’s radio show during a live one-hour rap freestyle broadcast, in which Peanut Butter Wolf expressed his fondness for Dopestyle’s freestyle abilities. That phone call & subsequent later conversations would eventually result in the song, “Rapper’s Delight II,” a track released in 1996 as a part of Stone Throw’s now considered classic & out-of-print release, first release, “Step On Our Egos,” a compilation showcasing the talents of Bay Area emcees such as Encore, Charizma, Dave Dub & others.
Sometime earlier as a college radio intern at KZSU for The Drum Show (longest consecutively running Hip Hop show in the world) hosted by Kevvy Kev, Dopestyle would meet future mentor & friend, Kutmasta Kurt (producer of classic Kool Keith albums-“Sex Styles,” “Dr. Dooom,” “Masters of Illusion” w/ Motion Man, “Diesel Truckers” as well as being well known and recognized for his remixes for various groups such as The Beastie Boys, Buju Banton, Dilated Peoples & Linkin Park to only name a few, as well as a record label owner…Threshold Recordings). Their mutual appreciation for each others unique musical talents would lead to the release of “Kutmasta Kurt Presents Dopestyle 1231” on Waxploitation (management home for Danger Mouse & label home for artists such as the Alkaholiks, Tweaker-guitarist for NIN, etc.) Records in 2004. Executive-produced by Kutmasta Kurt, the album featured cameos from Del the Funkyhomosapien, Kool Keith, Cannibal Ox, & Motion Man & was produced in its entirety by Tom3 (producer of recent Kool Keith collabo project, Project Polaroid).
CMJ described the album as,”If Massive Attack focused more on lyrics and the “hop” part of their triphop sonic gumbo, it might sound like the claustrophobic cyphers on the debut album by Dopestyle 1231.” In X8LR, the magazine writes, “Dopestyle who sounds at times like a demented Gift of Gab as “demented gift of gab.” (see Blackalicious).
Shortly after the release of that album, while shopping at Amoeba records in San Francisco, Dopestyle would meet Jason Chavez aka Deejay 4AM, (member of the indie rock band Black Fiction that in 2006 would be voted by SF WEEKLY as ‘Indie rock band of the year’ & The Fader magazine described Black Fiction as, “"Black Fiction stews up swamp thing sonics and scarecrow soul to make some seriously eerie music'), who worked there in the Hip Hop department. Having worked many years in Rasputin’s Records and the now defunct Tower Records, the two guys hit it off very well. Their common interest in creating music that transcends a single genre category tab in a record store has brought them together to create 2 unique & genre-bending unreleased albums.
The first album, “FOOL’S POOL” was recorded initially in 2005 during a ‘dark cloud’ of sorts for both individuals. The album features cameos by Motion Man & Fathed. The second later album, “THE LITTLE HAPPY” features cameos by Opio f/ Souls of Mischief/Hieroglyphics & Pro The Leader. Fortunately, both albums will see a 2007 release as a double-CD on Daly City Records. Currently & at any given time, Dopestyle is working 5 separate projects, which range from Death Metal, Hip Hop, producing Ambient & instrumental suites, silent movies, avant-pop, etc. One of Dopestyle’s major immediate projects is Grindbender (Yoko Solo, Dopestyle, Pu22l3)…musically decscribed as spastic/warped/audioentropy/approximating a recapitulation of Creation’s BIGBANGTHEORY.
