Nav Katze

Nav Katze

Nav Katze has been played on NTS over 10 times, featured on 17 episodes and was first played on 20 October 2016.

Nav Katze ("Nervous Cat") was a band from Tokyo, Japan comprising of Miwako Yamaguchi (山口美和子) (vocals and bass) and Naoko Iimura (飯村直子) (vocals and guitar).

Having pledged to form a band together when they were high school classmates, the duo started their activities at university in 1983, before recruiting Shino Furutachi (古舘詩乃) (drums) a year later. Produced by Tohru Okada (岡田徹) of Moonriders, their debut single Nav Katze (1986) and album OyZaC (1987) were released to excellent reception, and the band subsequently signed to major label Victor Entertainment. Furutachi would leave soon after their first album on the label, Kanki (歓喜) (1991).

Nav Katze released a further four albums, with Yuji Sugiyama (杉山勇司, aka. Logik Freaks) as producer and engineer. Their last album Gentle & Elegance (1996) was an outlier in regards to its techno-pop style, eschewing the rock leanings of previous material; Iimura's role was greatly reduced for this album while producer Yuji Sugiyama became a lead performer and songwriter. While Yamaguchi and Iimura remained close (they would tour with Moonriders later that year, and contributed to their album Bizarre Music For You) they decided to conclude the activities of Nav Katze in 1997.

Aside from a one-off recording for a music magazine in 2004 entitled "Hundred Worlds", there would be no new Nav Katze activity until 2021, when their discography was released on streaming services in remastered form alongside bonus material. This was followed by the release of vinyl compilations Fragment Daisy and Fragment Lilac in 2022, with a new song entitled "Song Nine" included on the digital edition of the latter.
