Trade Martin

Trade Martin

Trade Martin has been played on NTS in shows including We Are… w/ Paul Camo, featured first on 23 July 2014. Songs played include Fill In The Last Line and Heavy Rock At O.J..

Trade Martin is an American musician, songwriter, and producer. Martin’s work spans more than 5 decades and includes hit singles, Grammy Award winning records and countless TV jingles. Patti Labelle, Cher, Vanilla Fudge, Dusty Springfield, B.B. King, Dave Edmunds, Neil Diamond, B.T. Express, Lesley Gore, Rick Nelson, Rare Earth, Genya Raven, The Tokens, The Grateful Dead, Tony Orlando, Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland, Chet Atkins, Count Basie, Cass Elliot, Chip Taylor, Woody Guthrie, Neil Sedaka and Johnny Cash are just some of the household names that make up the Trade Martin Story. Martin wrote "Take Me For A Little While" which gained success by Vanilla Fudge.

Perhaps most well known for writing Peace to the World and producing B.B. King’s Grammy Award winning album B.B. King Live at San Quentin, Trade Martin can also be heard playing guitar on the Isley Brothers Twist and Shout and on Neil Diamond’s Cherry Cherry. His iconic contributions to American pop culture range from the Dixie Cups Going to the Chapel right through to TWA’s Fly the Friendly Skies and Prudential’s Own A Piece of the Rock jingles.

Martin worked with Johnny Power in the late 1950s, recording as Johnny & the Jokers and together they launched the label Rome Records, active from 1960 to 1962. The label signed the groups The Earls, Del & the Escorts, and The Glens. On many of these recordings, Martin played all of the backing instruments, overdubbing them track by track. Martin also released some solo material on Coed Records, including the 1962 hit That Stranger Used to Be My Girl, which climbed to #28 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the 1964 single Liverpool Baby. He released several further singles on Roulette Records and other labels in the 1960s and an LP entitled Let Me Touch You on Buddah Records in 1972. In 1974 Buddah also released the single Can’t Let Go by Trade Martin, Al Gorgoni and Chip Taylor (the writer of Wild Thing).

Martin spent nearly thirty years in production and arrangement, doing work from the '60s girl group era through to 1980s pop. He makes appearances on virtually all of the records Phil Spector would produce out of New York. Martin is also credited with discovering Larry Chance and the Earls and BT Express. He produced BT Express 1974 gold record Do It Till You're Satisfied and wrote their hit single Mental Telepathy.

Martin wrote several film scores including Stormy Monday, The Inkwell, It’s My Party and West New York. He also wrote a number of songs covered by noted acts, including Take Me for a Little While (which has been recorded by Dusty Springfield, Cher and Pattie La Belle), Peace to the World (B. B. King), and Don't You Double Cross Me (Dave Edmunds).

A father of two, Martin continues to perform throughout the New York metropolitan area. He also continues to write and to cultivate new talent. What follows is a partial list of Trade Martin’s musical legacy. The full extent of his influence on the entertainment industry may never be known…..
