The Jiants were a rockabilly quintet from Marion, Indiana. Members included Andy (Russell) Anderson on vocals, Jerry Hedges on guitar, Bill Lee Balsbaugh on piano and Ron Wolfe on drums. They all attended Marion Indiana High School. They were only around from 1959-1961. Jerry Hodges was their star guitarist. Not that much is known about The Jiants. They recorded Tornado and She's My Woman in 1959. Claudra (a label based out of Marion, Indiana) released the songs. The group began as a quartet and played briefly as a quintet with the addition of Ray Umbarger on bass. Please notice that in the photo shown here the guys have Gs on their jackets. They were originally the Giants after their high school mascot but when the recording came back the name was Jiants so they changed the name. The original recording included these four guys. Ray was added later when they needed a bigger sound. Ray's daughter Lisa Umbarger played bass for the Toadies, who recorded a version of Tornado. Jerry Hedges switched to bass in college at Indiana University and played with a band called The Electras. Jerry's son , Aaron Hedges, also picked up the bass and played with The Crawpuppies and The Megabeatles. The only surviving member of the Jiants is Bill Lee Balsbaugh. Delightfully Tornado is part of the soundtrack for a Shirley MacLaine movie, The Final Word. Despite the credits at the end of the movie, Tornado (and She's My Woman) were written and originally copyrighted by Jerry Hedges and Andy Anderson.
