Abigail Wyles

Abigail Wyles

Abigail Wyles has been played on NTS in shows including Public Order w/ Jlte & Lawson Benn, featured first on 24 April 2012. Songs played include Tobyjug and Tobyjug.

History

A singer songwriter based in London and signed to MTA Records, Abigail exhibited an innate ability and a keen ear from an early age in her liberal upbringing in Essex. Her natural musicality and intuitive sense of tune and melody was an indication of what was to come.

Along with her long time cohort, producing partner and instrumentalist Holly Simpson, Abigail is crafting something rare; a self penned, self produced sound with reference to the groundbreaking singer songwriters who have influenced her perspective; Marvin Gaye and Carole King to name but two. This though is wholly original thought provoking modern pop music, dynamic and haunting in equal measure.

Brought up in a music-loving household where the records of Motown sat next to those of the Troubadour set, Psych Rock and Classical, Abigail has taken those influences and along with her own love of the honest, powerful pop music of Kate Bush, Fleetwood Mac and The Eurhythmics is delivering her own approach to self-honed, conscious pop music.

Production / Sound

Holly and Abigail’s production develops around piano based melodies, crafting a unique soundscape, layering harmonies and live instrumentation. This is a sound, which breathes with ambition and raw uninhibited talent.

Swaggering drums writhe beneath synth melodies creating a deep harmonious rhythm; Abigail’s voice at once resolute and enigmatic leads the production, a natural sense of melody pervades her rich tone while intuitive vocal embellishments enrapture the listener. Her writing reflects the influence of the wise and introspective ability of Bill Withers and Nina Simone; both predominant to Abigail in terms of their presence, charisma and dignified honesty in their recordings and live shows.

The opening lines of Mantra, maybe best sum up Abigail’s perspective “Never been a big talker / Indeed I’m circumspect by nature / music is my mantra / I seek solace in it”.

Live Show / Future

In an age of non-committal, and sometimes throw away music; an open-minded, progressive approach to developing their sound and style lies at the core of Abigail and Holly’s musical sensibility. Abigail is a true expressionist and purveyor of her art form.

The live aspect of Abigail’s music is her means of broadening and re-presenting the material to her audience. An ambitious, ever developing, engrossing and emotive live show, truly shows the depth of talent and ability. Driven by Holly’s soul stirring synth chords and Abigail’s nuanced clarity, there is a growing sense that this is something all together fresh and remarkable.
