Tenores Di Bitti

Tenores Di Bitti

Tenores Di Bitti has been played on NTS in shows including Silvia Kastel , featured first on 30 January 2016. Songs played include Cantu A Ballu Seriu and Cantu A Isterritas.

Tenores de Bitti are a chorus from Bitti, Sardinia. They sing traditional songs in the "cantu a tenore" style. This style, typical of the inner and most remote areas of Sardinia, has a very ancient origin, possibly dating from pre-historic times, and has changed very little across centuries.

The "cantu a tenore" choruses comprise four elements, a leading singer ("sa Boghe": the voice) and three other singers with different vocal ranges (su Bassu, sa Contra, sa Mesu Boghe). Some think, although there is controvery on this topic, that these other three singers were meant to mimic the sounds of different animals and elements (sheep, cows, and the wind).

Tenores de Bitti have reached wider audiences thanks to their recording for Peter Gabriel's Real World Records (CD: S'Amore 'e Mama) and their appearences on National Italian Television. They have a repertoire of traditional songs, which encompasses themes typical of Sardinian poetry like Religion, Love, Lust, Lonliness, Revenge, Emigration.
