Rimarimba

Rimarimba

Rimarimba has been played on NTS over 30 times, featured on 29 episodes and was first played on 9 November 2015.

Robert Cox was born in 1953, near Woodbridge, Suffolk, UK and educated locally. A self-taught, lapsed, classical guitarist, he formed The Same in 1981 and released an album on his own label, Unlikely Records. This was followed by a single in 1982. The Same disbanded, to be succeeded by Rimarimba. The first release, in 1983, was Below The Horizon (a solo work). Collaboration with Lenny Bove in Philadelphia, USA resulted in On Dry Land, the second Rimarimba album, released in 1984. 1985 saw the release of In The Woods, on which computers were used for the first time in Cox's work and this third album also featured Lenny Bove as well as Davy Walklett and the GTOG Tabernacle Choir of Huddersfield. Chicago Death Excretion Geometry followed in 1987 and was, once again, a solo work. The last Rimarimba release, to date, was Gone To Hell In A Bucket, also in 1987. Cox cites Terry Riley, John Fahey and English psychedelia as influences. Below The Horizon and on Dry Land feature guitars, marimbas, keyboards, percussion and found sounds. In The Woods is similar, with the addition of computer controlled parts. Chicago Death Excretion Geometry is a large scale electronically synthesized blend of systems and chamber music. Gone To Hell In A Bucket consists of several short pieces in typical Rimarimba styles plus one long track of looped and layered found sounds. Rimarimba albums were originally cassette or vinyl releases on Unlikely Records. Some were subsequently issued as vinyl releases on Cordelia Records, Hamster Records and elsewhere. .
