Yan Pascal Tortelier

Yan Pascal Tortelier has been played on NTS in shows including Tafelmusik w/ Francesco Fusaro, featured first on 10 September 2015. Songs played include Piano Trio In A Minor, D'Un Matin De Printemps and Métaboles.

Yan Pascal Tortelier (born 19 April 1947) is a French conductor and violinist, and is the son of the cellist Paul Tortelier.

Tortelier was born in Paris. His father withdrew his children from formal education so that they could concentrate on music. Paul Tortelier was asked about this during an interview with Huw Wheldon on British television: Wheldon queried, "but what happens if [your children] don't become soloists?" and Tortelier responded, "Well, if you start thinking about what will happen if you don't succeed, you won't."

Tortelier has worked and recorded extensively in the United Kingdom. He has served as principal conductor of the Ulster Orchestra, and as Principal Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in Manchester from 1992 to 2003. He continues to work with the orchestra. He has also been a Principal Guest Conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYOGB).

Tortelier served in the newly-created post of Principal Guest Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra from 2005 to 2008. He is currently the Principal Guest Conductor of the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (OSESP).
