Meishi Smile is the electronic music project of Los Angeles artist Faye Yim, aka May, Grey, or Fei. They've previously performed as Yūko Imada and nono.. Meishi Smile's style of electronic music is influenced by noise, J-pop, shoegaze, electropop, and dream pop, among various other genres.
On November 5, 2010, Meishi Smile released their debut single "Synthetic Girl" on Zoom Lens, Yim's own label that they founded in the previous year. Lust, the debut Meishi Smile album, was released on September 22, 2012 as a limited run of handmade cassettes. This was a co-release between Zoom Lens and the Canadian-American label Orchid Tapes. Two years later, the album was remastered and reissued by Zoom Lens and fellow LA label Attack the Music, this time on CD and vinyl. The CD and digital releases include 6 bonus remixes of songs from the album.
In May 2014, Meishi Smile visited Japan for the first time to play three shows, starting with an appearance at a Maltine Records showcase on May 5 at Tokyo's LIQUIDROOM. They had previously released the mYSTERIOUS sUMMER vACATION EP through the netlabel on February 23, 2013. On May 9th they performed at 2.5D in Tokyo, and on the 11th they performed at an event in Osaka, also featuring bo en, KOSMO KAT, KiWi (COR!S & AZUpubschool), and tomad (DJ and co-founder of Maltine).
On October 11, 2014, Meishi Smile released Star, an EP containing the title track with six remixes of the song. This was a co-release between the Japanese netlabel Maltine Records and a Japanese illustration platform named sKILLupper.NET which provided artwork. On January 13, 2015, Blank Ocean was released via Ryan Hemsworth's Secret Songs.
Meishi Smile released their second full-length album …Belong on October 6, 2015. Featuring "Star" and a new version of "Blank Ocean," it was released on CD and vinyl.
On October 30, 2020, Meishi Smile released "Hate Floods Slow," a full band rearrangement of the song which previously appeared on the charity compilation Love Without Domination (2016). On the following day, the lineup was introduced as it was announced that the project is now a band: Fei (lead vocals, guitar, electronics), Kevin Sílva (guitar, violin – also in Comrade(s)), Zachary Roy (drums – aka @FalafelRapper), and Jason Yim (bass). This full lineup began performing live together in 2020, beginning with their set at Two Dreamers.
