The group MELLAA (Music Encompasses Life Love And Ascension) was formed on the campus of Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. in 1977. Created in the classroom of the SU jazz institute headed by the late great educator Alvin Batiste. Batiste has taught others like Randy Jackson (American Idol), his brother Herman, Donald Harrison, Henry Butler, Charlie Singleton (Cameo), and Woodie Douglas (Spirit). The original Members of Mellaa were Roland (Dalton) Francis (Gtr), Abdul (Daniel) Lewis (Trpt), Henry Randle (Drums), Warren Thomas (trmb and keys), Earnest Nation(trpt and keys), and Renard (Rejo) Johnson (Bass) After Moving to the San Francisco Bay area Dalton Francis was later replaced by Morris Legrande (Gtr and Vocals), the composer of this tune. Adding Vocalist Andre Williams, MELLAA enjoyed airplay with the singles "Making Love In The Fast Lane" and "Free" . Making Love In the Fast Lane reached number 58 on BillBoard's R&B chart. The funky groove "Bet You Wanna Dance" was just another indicator of the talents of MELLAA, winning first place in the Budweiser Showdown of Bands.
