Stock, Hausen & Walkman

Stock, Hausen & Walkman

Stock, Hausen & Walkman has been played on NTS in shows including Tim Koh: Kokonut Trip, featured first on 26 October 2016. Songs played include Buy Me, Keep Going Wee Wee and Spoons.

No other artist's name made quite as much sense as that of sound collage group Stock, Hausen & Walkman - a double pun embracing pioneering electronic composer and theorist Karlheinz Stockhausen, the '80s pop-by-numbers production team Stock, Aitken & Waterman.

Stock, Hausen & Walkman formed in the UK in 1989 as an experimental/improv quartet consisting of Andrew Sharpley, Matthew Wand, cellist Dan Weaver, and guitarist Rex Casswell. They played at Derek Bailey's request in 1990, but became a trio when Casswell left while Weaver began taking recording time-outs to perform for dance and theatre.

They became known for their hands-on, DIY approach, consisting of obscure samples and messed up beats, quirky songs and subversively funny collages with a healthy disregard for copyright issues: "taking pot shots at anything that moves, be it high art music, low pop or cheesy listening" (The Wire 163). Distinctive packaging has been prevalent in most SHW's releases.

Weaver left before the "Ventilating Deer" CD-ROM came out and Wand and Sharpley continued on with an album-per-year release schedule on their own Hot Air label. They released 7 albums, 2 EPs, 2 singles, and a split EP with Anthony Child until their split in 2001.
