Deft

Deft has been a regular guest on You'll Soon Know w/ Tim Parker, first appearing on 23 September 2015 and most recently on 5 March 2020. Deft has been played on NTS over 70 times, featured on 62 episodes and was first played on 2 July 2012.

Yip Wong AKA Deft has become an immediately recognisable producer that skilfully hops from headphone to dance styles through cinematic sound design, crisp intricate percussion and immersive atmospheres.

Drawing influence from Hip Hop, House, 140, Jungle & Footwork, displaying them through technique & style makes him impressively adept at shaking off the constraints of genre and tempo.

Deft’s beginnings in electronic music have seen him strive from peak to peak through a strong & consistent set of highly praised EPs, collabs & remixes through labels such as WotNot, Hooversound, 20/20 LDN, 1985 Music, Critical, Exit, Rwina, Brownswood and Space Hardware.

Having the opening track for Maya Jane Coles’ DJKicks mix opened doors for Deft to remix for the likes of Ivy Lab, Ital Tek, Submerse, Hector Plimmer, Tiga, Graham Coxon, as well as gaining press support from Mixmag, DJ Mag, XLR8R, Pitchfork & FACT Mag.

His music has taken him around the world with headline shows & tours in USA, Canada, Europe & Japan, as well as supporting the likes of Eprom, Kahn, Ivy Lab, Alix Perez, Skream, Machinedrum, Martyn & Tokimonsta. Key performances have included Boiler Room, Bass Coast and Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards. 2019 brought a new chapter to Deft’s career with the release of his first LP, ‘Cracks’ on 20/20 LDN; a release that was his most distinctive and emotively driven music to date. ‘Cracks’ came at #27 in DJ Mag’s ’Top 50 Albums of 2019’. Shortly after, Deft started his own label B4 Music releasing new material from himself and other artists such as XL Order, Scented and more.
