Broderick Smith (born in Hertfordshire on 17 February 1948; died 30 April 2023) was a British-born Australian multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and sometime actor. He was a member of 1970s bands Sundown, Carson and The Dingoes, 1980s Broderick Smith's Big Combo, and he recorded and performed solo and in duos.
Migrating to Australia with his family in April 1959, Smith started playing folk and blues music in 1962. Leaving school and having a variety of jobs, he joined Blues outfit the Adderley Smith Blues Band. In 1968 Smith was press-ganged into the Australian Army for two years. After, he helped form a country roots type act called Sundown.
Smith's first commercially recorded work was in 1972 with Carson, a boogie and blues band. Then in 1973 he helped form The Dingoes, a country rock group that is a main inspiration behind the modern country rock explosion. Signed up to American management in 1976, they went there to live and work until the end of 1978.
Smith eventually returned to Australia and formed the Big Combo. During this time he was also a singer on the Andrew Durant Memorial concert album.
He released albums under his own name, recording in Australia, Canada and the US. He recorded with Cat Stevens, Jimmy Barnes, Steve Cropper, The Memphis Horns, Buffy Saint Marie, Phil Ochs, Tommy and Phil Emmanuel.
Smith performed as a duo with Mick Ahearn (keyboards) in the late 1990s and produced other recording artists at Harcourt Valley Recorders. He also performed with Mick O'Connor on piano in the early 2000s, sometimes they added Pip Avent on tuba and Tim O'Connor on drums, with this line-up Smith recorded Too Easy in 2002.
He held workshops on songwriting, vocals and harmonica, including in schools, prisons, reformatories, as well as music stores. He was involved in the writing of somewhere around 200 songs.
