Good luck explaining the contemporary pop, hip hop and R&B landscape without Odd Future. Many of its current trends – colourful, jazz inflected production, a focus on collectives and collaborative scenes, free genre experimentation and cross pollination, were all channelled through a crew of LA school kids, skateboarders and their friends at the dawn of the 2010s. Tyler, The Creator, Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt, The Internet, and numerous acts and artists who have orbited the now defunct label of Odd Future represent a dominance of modern US popular music that is tough to truly calculate. We sift through their influence and pick out some of their most important music.

Mateo Murphy

Mateo Murphy

Mateo Murphy has been played on NTS in shows including Mixed Fruit w/ Eddie Junior, featured first on 11 September 2014. Songs played include Love Express (Umek Remix), Love Express (Chris Liebing Remix) and Apex.

Hailing from Montreal, Canada, Mateo Murphy is a influential member of Canada's techno scene, with over 15 years of experience behind the decks, and dozens of releases and remixes to his name.

From his beginnings early in Montreal's rave scene, he has developed a reputation for his seamless mixing and flawless selection, making him an in demand dj both at home and abroad. He held a 3 year residency at Montreal's notorious Aria nightclub, playing alongside numerous techno greats, and has toured Europe and South America on numerous occasions, performing at legendary clubs such as Fabric in London, Ostgut in Berlin and Nitsa in Barcelona.

He has also made an indelible mark as a producer and remixer, both solo and as a producer for Tiga. For the latter, he has produced numerous tracks and remixes, including his hit cover of Nelly's "Hot in Herre". His own productions have been more underground, but have consistently found themselves in the record boxes and mix cds of djs such as Darren Emmerson, Danny Howells, Seb Fontaine, Josh Wink and Timo Mass.

Recent years have found him a little quieter on the performance and release fronts, but he's still as busy as ever in the studio, exploring and refining new sounds. Watch for an explosion of new releases in 2009…
