Chieko Mori (森稚重子) is a Japanese koto player.
By the age of three Mori started to learn the traditional Japanese instrument, the koto, along with traditional Japanese dance. After graduating from university in Tokyo (SFC), Mori started to compose her own music. She left Japan in 1999 and moved to Treviso, Italy, where she was invited to FABRICA. For years she explored musical traditions, including Eastern and Western music, along with folk and acoustic music. Mori, though having fully mastered the techniques of classical playing handed down over centuries, adopts a fresh approach towards the instrument, suggesting new possibilities for improvisation and imagination.
She collaborated on koto with Michael Galasso (violinist & composer), Phil Minton, and Robert Wilson's theatre production. In 2005, her first solo album, Jumping Rabbit, was released by Tzadik Records (New York).
In Spring 2008, she composed music for Swedish choreographer Virpi Pahkinen's world premier at Dansens Hus in Stockholm.
