Gijs Hendriks (Utrecht, The Netherlands, February 26, 1938 - May 21, 2017) was a Dutch jazz saxophonist (tenor, soprano, baritone and alt) and composer.
His first professional work as a jazz musician, Hendriks had in 1955, in a club for American soldiers in Frankfurt am Main. He lived and worked in Germany, France and Morocco and returned to the Netherlands in the early 1960's.
In 1967, together with bassist Bert Ruiter and guitarist Herman Meyer, Hendriks founded the Fullhouse group. This band played mostly rhythm & blues and soul.
He was a member of Boy Edgar's big band and then led his own groups for many years often with bassist Bert van Erk and drummer Michael Baird. He also performed with Slide Hampton, Fred Leeflang, Kenny Wheeler, Michael Moore, Rick Hollander and John English
He had his first record as leader in 1972. In that same year he also received the Wessel Ilcken Award. In 1978 he received the cultural award of the city of Utrecht and in 1983 the VARA Jazz Award.
Gijs Hendriks also played church organ. He died in 2017 at the age of 79 in a nursing home in his hometown of Utrecht.
