Roland Young began studying Classical and Jazz clarinet at the age of 9. He was tutored by his grandfather, Lawrence Denton, also a renowned clarinetist and composer. At the age of 14 he formed a vocal group and produced his first vinyl as "Roland Young and the Velveteers". The year afterwards he formed a free improvisation/jazz woodwind trio.
