Partho Das is a musician of many dimensions. He is a soloist sensitive to the nuances of his instrument, the sitar. He spent his early years at the Ali Akbar College of Music, Calcutta, learning the sitar from Ustad Bahadur Hussain Khan, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Professor Nikhil Banerjee. Later, he spent six years under the tutelage of Prof. Santosh Kumar Banerjee of the Rabindra Bharati University. Partho's delicate touch is typical of the Senia Gharana. He has imbibed the depth of technique of the Surbahar Ang of alap rendering from his guru, Professor Santosh Kumar Banerjee. A graduate of the Calcutta University, Partho Das is himself a teacher of the instrument. At present he is Professor at the Bharatiya Kala Kendra, New Delhi, and has been associated for many years with this institute and with the Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, He has performed extensively in England, Afghanistan, Algeria, Ghana, the Middle East and Japan. In India he performs at music conferences in different parts of the country. Partho has participated in the Radio Sangeet Sammelan and has featured in the National Programme broadcasts both for AIR (Radio) and for Doordarshan (National Television). To his credit, Partho is known also as a composer of repute. He has composed the musical scores for the ballets of the Bharatiya Kala Kendra, Triveni Kala Sangam, Natya Ballet Centre, Natya Institute of Choreography and items for the Kathak Kendra. He has composed music for television serials like Asman Kaise Kaise, Purvai, Pratham Pratishruti and Ankh Me Ankh. His score for the documentary Manas, Chitrankan Evam Gayan was awarded the best composition of the year in the category of dance and music. Partho scored the music for the Uptron Awards Ceremony, 1987. His virtuosity in this field gives him a special identity. His reverence for the classical and his adaptability to new sound allows for a knowledgable creativity.
