After living in at least eighteen places in four countries, he eventually settled in Chicago. In 1956 he was one of the founding members of Chicago's chapter of the Irish Musician's Association. He has performed for over 40 years at local Chicago venues and in concerts. In the 1950s he was a member of Chicago's Irish Guild Players. In 1996 he appeared in the Goodman Theater's production of Eugene O'Neill's A Touch of the Poet with Brian Dennehy. On his album "One's Own Place", he is joined on several tracks by his daughter Maggie Healy on flute, tin whistle and fiddle, sister Verona Ryan on fiddle, brother Johnny Henry on fiddle and life-long friend Malachy Towey on bodhran.
